In a new post to his blog, Rory Feek shares his wife’s tradition of getting seeds ready in January to be planted for the spring. This year, however, she is teaching Rory the process she goes through, so he can carry on the tradition. It’s a job he states he really is not looking forward to taking over.
Joey asked for egg shells to be saved, so she could start the process early, and start sharing her love of gardening with her husband.
In a picture shared on their blog, Joey is seen holding her seedlings in egg shells, trying to get an even earlier start to her spring tradition. As Rory states, “She does it because it’s important to her. Planting a garden and raising food that she can feed her family is part of who Joey is. That doesn’t stop just because you have cancer or are stuck in a bed for months-on-end. Life goes on. And what was important, is still important to her.”
It is obvious that Joey takes great pride in this tradition, and she is making sure that is is passed along to keep that tradition going.
As Rory continues, “But still, I sit beside her and smile and listen and take notes. And I will keep the garden going. Joey’s garden.
And I’m sure in time, I will learn to love it too. Because she loved it. And part of her will be with us… in every seed we plant, and every vegetable we harvest … and every bite we take.”
While it is a garden no one knows if Joey will see grow, it is one that will be created with love and understanding, and one that will help nourish the soul of all those helping to keep Joey’s wishes alive.
